Utrecht around Christmas feels quaint and intimate. A pause from the hustle of Amsterdam, Utrecht is best explored by foot or bike.
Make sure to look both ways! Those bikes don’t stop in the Netherlands for anyone. I’ve never seen so many bikes in my life.
The Dom Tower is a steady landmark guiding you through the city’s narrow streets. Standing beside it, the Domkerk offers more stunning Gothic details and stain glass.
In 1674, a storm caused the nave of the Domkerk to collapse, separating the church from its tower. The space in between is now Dom Square.
Canals definitely define the unique charm of Utrecht. Amsterdam as well.
Along the Oudegracht, historic cellars sit at water level. Quaint shops line the streets and lots of restaurants now occupy the cellars.
Another nearby canal neighborhood, Nieuwegracht offers a more calm, residential vibe. Twijnstraat adds local life to the picture with shops, bakeries, and everyday essentials.
For a quieter cultural pause, Museum Catharijneconvent provides warmth and reflection, blending art, history, and spirituality in a setting that suits the Christmas season perfectly.
And then there’s ’t Koffieboontje—tiny, fragrant, and welcoming. A cup of coffee here, hands wrapped around warmth, feels like the ideal ending to a winter walk.
Utrecht at Christmas doesn’t shout. It glows. A place to breathe and reset for the new year.
